Expanding Access Through Mobile and Nurse-Led Care
Challenge:
Many medically vulnerable populations experience barriers to obtaining consistent healthcare services, including transportation limitations, provider shortages, geographic constraints, and limited access to preventive and chronic care services. These factors contribute to delayed access to care, unmet healthcare needs, and increased demand on healthcare systems.
Solution:
Through the HRSA Nurse Education, Practice, Quality and Retention (NEPQR) Mobile Health Training Program, the Dr. Gloria J. McNeal Nurse-Managed Clinic (GJMNMC) at the National University implemented a nurse-led mobile healthcare model that directly delivers healthcare services with hands-on workforce training opportunities. Key program features include:
- Mobile healthcare delivery: Clinical services provided at schools, faith-based organizations, and other local service locations.
- Integrated care services: Coordination of primary care, behavioral health care, and health education within a single care model.
- Partnerships with local healthcare organizations: Collaboration to increase awareness and utilization of available healthcare services.
Impact:
✅ Delivered mobile healthcare services to more than 1,000 patients over four years.
✅ Demonstrated a scalable nurse-led care model that supports workforce development, expands healthcare access, and strengthens local service delivery.
